Do most of people in Netherlands speak english fluently? I know this sounds dumb but I want to spend some time there in a exchange program and I only speak english and portuguese :/
i wouldnt call it fluently, we’re not native speakers, but yes, we speak and understand english very well, especially everyone under 50. we know we’re only a small country and who the hell speaks dutch anyway so we’ve always been focused on foreign languages (a bit too much at times tbh, it seems in amsterdam everyone’s a tourist who must get spoken to in english until they talk dutch back) almost everyone i know can make himself understandable in 3 or 4 languages so i wouldn’t worry about that! especially our generation speaks it very well, since we grew up with internet and we consume all media in english…
the amount of time I spend thinking in english instead of my own language is slightly worrying
